Watch GFL on Military Makeover!

As part of the Military Makeover TV series, Military Makeover Operation Career (MMOC) tells the inspirational stories of active servicepeople and military veterans across the United States as they transition into civilian life and find employment. MMOC profiles companies such as GFL that offer career opportunities to veterans, which help support them in their transition and ensure it is a successful one.

After a callout for participants in July, three GFL employees got to share their stories on Military Makeover.

The GFL employees featured include Willie Brown, an operations supervisor at Williamston, NC, who has been in the waste industry for 24 years. He is a 15-year veteran who achieved the rank of E-7 with the US Army/ Reserve and National Guard.

“I came to the company because I wanted a job where I could work and still have time to be with my family,” Willie said in MMOC, “and the work schedule that GFL provided allowed me to do just that.”

Andrew Smith is a maintenance manager in Oklahoma City who has worked in the waste industry for over 13 years, the past year and a half at GFL. He was enlisted in the Air Force for nine years as an aerospace ground equipment technician.

“[At GFL] I get to travel a lot and do different things,” Andrew said. “I’m never doing the same thing every single day. There’s always some new challenge and it makes the most of all my skills.”

Nicholas Zdeb is a general manager of the Raleigh, NC, hauling branch. After serving five years with the Marine Corps., he has worked in the waste industry for 11 years.

“I learned a lot [in the military] – a lot of interesting skills, a lot of self-discipline, a lot of self-control, which helped propel me in the career I’m in now,” Nicholas said. “[At GFL] the world is your oyster. There are a lot of opportunities.”

Moving away from military life into civilian life can be challenging for veterans, but finding a career with a company that values their special skill set can help make the adjustment easier.

GFL values the unique skills, abilities and experience that veterans possess, which lend themselves to a wide variety of positions at GFL that can build on our employees’ military training and experience, to create successful post-service careers.

Thank you Willie, Andrew and Nicholas for your service and for being great ambassadors for GFL!
