Jacob (JT) Howington, general manager of GFL’s Chesapeake, Virginia, branch was among the 2023 40 Under 40 award winners announced by Waste 360.
“I feel extremely honored to have even been considered for this recognition and really excited that I was selected as one of the winners,” Howington said. “When I look at others in the industry who have received this recognition in past years and the positions they are in, it makes me feel very optimistic about my future with GFL.”
Waste 360’s 40 Under 40 awards recognize inspiring and innovative professionals under the age of 40 whose work in waste, recycling and organics have made a significant contribution to the waste and recycling industry.
The winners will be honored during an awards ceremony at WasteExpo to be held May 1 to 4, 2023 in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Howington began his career in the waste industry in 2016 when he accepted a position in Waste Industries’ Management Development Program. After spending time in a variety of operations across North Carolina, his first permanent position was operations supervisor of the roll-off line of business and three transfer stations in Durham, North Carolina.
Over the past seven years, Howington has held four positions with increasing responsibility, coming to GFL with the acquisition of Waste Industries in 2018. In 2020, he became general manager of GFL’s facilities in Chesapeake and Elizabeth City, Virginia. Since then he’s also been assigned a hauling operation and a transfer station in West Point.
In January, Howington was voted Chair of the Finance Committee for the Virginia Waste Industries Association which is the Virginia chapter of the National Waste & Recycling Association.
“This will be something that can help me continue my growth and professional development,” Howington said.
In his spare time Howington enjoys cruising on the river with his wife and doing some fishing.
Congratulations, JT!
