We are delighted to announce that GFL Environmental’s Squamish and Victoria facilities in British Columbia, have been selected as recipients of the Call2Recycle 2025 Leaders in Sustainability Award for their achievements in collecting batteries for recycling.
Both facilities have won this award previously, demonstrating their ongoing commitment to waste diversion, responsible battery management and environmental leadership.
“We’re excited to receive this award and shine a spotlight on the battery collection program we’ve undertaken with Call2Recycle,” said GFL Squamish General Manager Denise Imbeau.
In 2024, the Squamish branch launched the first curbside battery collection service in British Columbia in partnership with Call2Recycle’s Recycle Your Batteries, Canada! program, collecting more than 1,300 kilograms of batteries.
“In 2025, we did two curbside collections and collected a total of 1,507 kilograms,” said Imbeau. “We feel that our advertising really helped to increase public awareness and the number of batteries we collected.”
Igor Bacic, Yard Supervisor for the Dunford Transfer Station in Victoria, cited several factors that have led to their success in battery recycling. He noted that providing great customer service, functioning as a “one-stop shop” and displaying clear signage make it easy for customers to recycle batteries at their location.
“We will continue doing our best to keep batteries out of landfills and ensuring they are disposed of properly,” said Bacic. “The 13,123 kilograms of batteries our branch sent to Call2Recycle in 2025 is the largest volume I have sent during my time at GFL.”
Call2Recycle had its most successful year to date in 2025, with more than 8 million kilograms of batteries collected across Canada, a 17% increase from the previous year.
