GFL rocks the North Carolina SWANA Road-E-O

GFL drivers, landfill operators and mechanics racked up the awards at the SWANA Road-E-O held in Raleigh by the North Carolina Chapter of the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA).

“We had beautiful weather for the Road-E-O,” said Jordan Weiner, regional environmental, health and safety manager with GFL and NC SWANA safety ambassador. “GFL was proud to be one of the event sponsors and we had 52 contestants and 36 volunteers.”

Road-E-O contestants represented public and private waste haulers in North Carolina and competed for top driving, operating and mechanical honors.

“The City of Raleigh hosted the trucking and mechanics competitions and the South Wake Landfill, which is operated by GFL, hosted the landfill competition and they did an exquisite job,” Weiner said.

In total, approximately 475 competitors, volunteers and guests attended the events.

Drivers had to maneuver vehicles through a pre-set course in categories that include rear loader, automated side loader, front end loader and roll off.

Landfill operators competed in three categories: compactor, loader and bulldozer.

Mechanics were tested in areas of troubleshooting and diagnostics.

“For the mechanics competition, mechanics had to identify and diagnose as many random defects in vehicles as they could find as quickly as possible,” Weiner said.

All competitors were judged on accuracy and time in their respective categories. As well as the skills portion of the competition, drivers and mechanics also had to complete a written test.

After a fantastic showing by the GFL competitors, they attended the Awards Ceremony and Banquet on Saturday evening where trophies, cash awards and door prizes were handed out.

First and second place winners in each category can advance to the SWANA International Road-E-O which will be held in Dublin, Georgia, on October 5, 2024.

GFL had first and/or second place winners in front loader, rear loader, roll off, mechanics, compactor and bulldozer categories.
