CVSA Inspector Championships: GFL judges show commitment to safety 

At the recent CVSA North America Inspector Championship (NAIC) in Indianapolis, Indiana, Marc Moncion, director of fleet compliance, and Jeffrey McCumber, driver trainer specialist, showcased their expertise in safety and compliance as judges on behalf of GFL Environmental.  

“It was an incredible experience that provided a valuable opportunity to interact with enforcement officers,” said Moncion. “Jeffrey and I were truly honored to be hand-selected as judges.”  

GFL proudly sponsored the NAIC, North America’s premier event for recognizing and awarding excellence among commercial motor vehicle inspectors. This competition draws the top inspectors from jurisdictions across North America to showcase their skills.  

The weeklong event included extensive learning and training sessions, covering the latest safety trends, technologies, standards, and inspection procedures.   

During the competition, inspectors tackle four distinct sectors: Level One Truck Inspection, Hazardous Materials/ Dangerous Goods Inspection, Cargo Tank/ Other Bulk Packaging Inspection, and Passenger Carrier Vehicle (Motorcoach) Inspection.  

The judging panel, which included Moncion and McCumber, evaluated participants on effectiveness and efficiency as they navigated scenarios within a designated time limit. Inspectors were assessed on their vehicle inspection skills, document analysis, and ability to accurately identify safety violations.  

Although relatively new to GFL, Moncion brings a wealth of experience from his previous leadership roles in safety and compliance within government enforcement. Since joining GFL, he has focused on maintaining safety standards, mitigating risks, and ensuring regulatory compliance for fleet operations.   

McCumber, a GFL veteran with nearly a decade of service, started in Industrial Site Services and Emergency Response before moving into Transportation and eventually becoming a Driver Trainer Specialist. In this role, he trains drivers to comply with National Safety Code (NSC) Standards and Commercial Vehicle Operator’s Registration (CVOR) requirements and stay up-to-date with the latest safety protocols.   

The NAIC event also featured a truck driving competition happening simultaneously in another section of the arena, which offered a unique opportunity for truckers and inspectors to connect and exchange insights.   

“Truckers and inspectors often operate separately, so the event provided a rare opportunity for direct engagement,” McCumber said. “It created a supportive environment where everyone could share knowledge and seek advice.”  

When it comes to safety, Moncion and McCumber stress the importance of keeping GFL employees informed and proactive. They emphasize the need to educate both frontline drivers and supervisory staff to ensure everyone has a thorough understanding of regulations and best practices. With frequent changes in regulations across different jurisdictions, staying current requires continuous effort and dedication.  

“Repetition strengthens driver performance,” McCumber explained. “We break down information into manageable chunks to avoid overwhelming our personnel, which helps empower them with the confidence to excel.”
