GFL and Peepeekisis Cree Nation announce partnership

GFL and Peepeekisis Developments Ltd. (PDL), the economic development board for the Peepeekisis Cree Nation, have signed a partnership agreement to develop business interests together while creating long-term jobs for youth and caring for their traditional lands.

The Cree Nation, whose name "Peepeekisis" means “sparrow hawk,” is situated in southern Saskatchewan.

“Together, we are working to develop a long-term respectful partnership,” said Blair Dueck, GFL’s senior account manager, Indigenous Engagement. “Whether it’s GFL’s environmental services or solid waste divisions, we want to make sure that we’re supporting the range of PDL’s businesses.”

Peepeekisis Chief Francis Dieter is excited about the new partnership and the opportunities it will bring.

"GFL has a strong track record and excellent reputation in the waste management field,” Chief Dieter said. “After numerous discussions, we realized that our nation's goals and the goals of GFL aligned perfectly. It was a clear choice for us to join forces, in order to provide value to clients, improve our planet, and inspire the younger generation."

Dueck and the team have extensively engaged with members of the PDL to establish common ground between GFL and the Peepeekisis Cree Nation. This has led to a comprehensive understanding of PDL’s businesses and the services they offer, while also demonstrating how GFL can collaborate with
them in a reciprocal relationship.

“Open communication helps us build a relationship that benefits PDL and GFL, not just from an economic perspective, but also by achieving our mutual goals to ensure that we preserve nature for the future,” Dueck said.

PDL is committed to establishing a self-sustaining economy for the Peepeekisis Cree Nation, while also focusing on creating a thriving community with long-term job opportunities for its youth.

"We are always considering the future of our youth; we want them to have the opportunity to build stable lives, and it all begins with a good job," explained Peepeekisis Headman Allan Bird. “By having companies like GFL visit and demonstrate what they are all about, we hope to inspire our kids and give them an idea of potential career paths.”

GFL and PDL are jointly exploring ways to showcase the career opportunities within GFL and collaborating on training programs that will provide trade skills for youth and women. Additionally, there are plans to bring GFL’s signature green trucks to schools to educate students about our operations.

"We are enthusiastic about collaborating to create a promising future for the community and its members," Dueck concluded.
