High Point C & D Landfill celebrates 10 years incident-free

GFL’s High Point Construction & Demolition (C & D) Landfill in Jamestown, North Carolina, recently reached an amazing milestone: they have gone 10 years without having an incident or an injury!

“We want to recognize everyone for what they’ve done,” said High Point’s General Manager Steve Cobb. “We’re all really proud of this achievement and we’re looking forward to 10 more incident-free years.”

Operating five days a week, High Point receives waste from seven counties around North Carolina, including the cities of High Point, Greensboro and Winston-Salem. The landfill opened in 2004 and was acquired by GFL in 2012.

High Point receives 300 to 800 tonnes of material a day which may include construction and renovation waste, demolition waste and roadwork material.

High Point’s team works hard to compact waste as much as possible to help extend the life of the landfill. Employees operate equipment such as a compactor, excavator, bulldozer, dirt truck and bucket loader to push and compact the waste.

“We all have a job and a role within this company, and we all want to make sure that everybody goes home at the end of the day in the same shape they came to work in,” Cobb said.

Some of the ways the High Point team embraces GFL’s Safe For Life culture include:

  • Holding safety meetings every two weeks.
  • Asking employees for their input on safety matters.
  • Engaging with employees by listening to their ideas for enhancing safety.
  • Providing PPE such as helmets and safety glasses that fit well and are comfortable so that employees can wear them all day.
  • Encouraging employees to look out for each other.
  • Making sure that visitors to the landfill are safety compliant and providing them with proper PPE when necessary.

Cobb believes it’s important to give workers the latitude to speak up, to make recommendations and then to follow through with them.

“The employees see a lot more than the managers do who spend most of the day behind their desk,” Cobb said. “The employees are the professionals when it comes to safety. Be sure they understand our culture and provide them with the tools to manage any risks.”

To celebrate this tremendous achievement, each employee received a jacket personalized with their name and noting the 10-year accomplishment.

Congratulations to all the employees at High Point!
