On March 31, GFL celebrated the grand opening of its state-of-the-art Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in Edmonton, Alberta, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
“We’re excited for the opportunities the opening of this facility creates to support and extend Alberta’s recycling efforts,” said Ashley Marr, regional vice president of Alberta and Northern BC solid waste.
With its advanced sorting and processing technology, the facility will optimize recycling efficiency and increase the volume of material that is processed.
The MRF is equipped with optical sorters for material separation, a high-production Bollegraaf baler to produce top-quality materials for resale in markets across North America, and an automated bag breaker suited for Edmonton’s blue bag program. The facility also features a robust Fire Rover fire suppression system to mitigate fire risks.
By improving operational efficiency and supporting the circular economy, the facility reduces waste, enables material reuse, and promotes sustainable production practices.
The facility will play a key role in supporting businesses and residents in their recycling efforts. It is expected to divert thousands of tonnes of recyclable materials annually, reducing landfill waste and maximizing resource recovery.
