GFL celebrates National Volunteer Week

National Volunteer Week with GFL

“Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart.” - Elizabeth Andrew, American author.

National Volunteer Week is celebrated annually during the third week of April. This week is about highlighting the people that take time to volunteer and better their community.

The Full Circle Project is an initiative for our GFL employees to get involved in and a chance for branches across North America to partner with a local charity they are passionate about.

Volunteering is an integral part of our partnerships with local charities that helps extend our support beyond a monetary donation.

We want to thank all our employees that have volunteered their time and highlight a few of the Full Circle Projects our teams have been involved with.

The Calgary Team

“Our Calgary team geared up in coveralls as we painted a white picket fence for the animal enclosures, and then we were treated to playtime with several puppies,” GFL Sales Manager Mike Prevost said.

The Full Circle Project donated CA $10,000 to the Calgary Humane Society in Calgary, Alberta.

The donation went towards sponsorship of the dog kennel that is part of the Building Improvement Enhancement Project and helped with general expenses at the shelter.

The Calgary Humane Society is committed to creating a better tomorrow through compassion and collaboration. Their mission is to help as many animals as possible and give them the life they deserve.

“Our experience at the Humane Center was emotionally uplifting, as was the commitment of all those involved in the facility,” Prevost said.

The Greenville-Spartanburg Team

“Our staff do an amazing job with the children at The Little White House. They give families hope and let them know they are not alone in their journey,” GFL Office Administrator Tracy Cooke said.

GFL is a proud partner of The Little White House and donated US $5,000 to support its ongoing mission of supporting youth with autism.

The charity provides a cohesive program for youth with autism between the ages of 5 – 15 within the Greenville-Spartanburg, South Carolina area. Their mission is to equip students with skills that will positively enhance their lives.

GFL’s Greenville-Spartanburg employees volunteered at The Little White House’s annual Golden Strip Pumpkin Patch event, the proceeds will continue to support local non-profits in the Golden Strip area.

“We work alongside the kids and other volunteers to unload a semi-truck filled with pumpkins. We build a fireman’s line and pass the pumpkins person to person from the truck to the patch where they are arranged and displayed to sell,” Cooke said.

The Toronto Team

Our Toronto employees partnered with the Habitat for Humanity Greater Toronto Area by participating in the construction and landscaping of one of their housing developments.

Overall, the staff devoted over 117 hours to this project.

GFL’s donation of CA $10,000 will go towards assisting Canadian families who would otherwise not be able to afford home ownership by building homes and providing affordable mortgages geared to their income.

The people that benefit from these services are primarily single parents, Indigenous families, newcomers to Canada or low-income families moving from the rental market or subsidized housing to home ownership.
