Driver Damian Hill lends a helping hand

Driver Damian Hill was recently featured in an article in the Tideland News for his big heart and willingness to help customers on his residential route in Swansboro, North Carolina.

One day as he was doing his route, Hill spotted an older customer having trouble moving her trash can to the road from the back door of her house. He pulled over, jumped out of his truck and helped her, and when the trash can was emptied, he brought it back for her as well.

When a writer for the newspaper saw Hill lending a helping hand, she stopped and spoke to him and later contacted him through GFL. Witnessing Hill’s act of kindness inspired her to write a story about him.

The story has made Hill a bit of a celebrity with his local GFL coworkers. Operations Manager Tyler Pate posted the article in the office in Jacksonville, NC, and framed a copy for the Newport office.

Hill explained that his upbringing instilled in him a respect for his elders.

“I’m from the South and most of us respect people, especially older people,” Hill said. “We try to look out for each other the best that we can.”

He started at GFL two years ago in May and in that time, he’s gotten to know a lot of his customers well.

The helping relationship goes both ways. Hill says that on his Swansboro route, some of the older people bring him water when it’s hot outside.

“I’ve been on this route since I started so I know them well,” Hill said. They come out and talk to me while I’m picking up their trash. They make me feel appreciated.”

After Hill obtained his CDL, he was looking for something different to do and GFL fit the bill. He looks forward to moving up in the company and would one day like to share his experience and help teach new drivers about GFL's Safe For Life culture.

Hill’s favorite part of his job is “helping people when I can and trying to make the city a better place.”

When he’s not working, Hill spends time with his family. He has a teenage son and daughter who both play sports.

He also loves fishing, which he’s done since he was a kid growing up in Maysville, NC, and he enjoys hunting.
