GFL donation builds hope for a child with cancer

Through the Full Circle Project, GFL has partnered with the Roc Solid Foundation to fund a brand-new playset for three-year-old cancer patient Kayla Bell.

To address Kayla’s need for play, exercise, fun and the opportunity to simply be a kid, the GFL Chesapeake employees participated in the Roc Solid On Demand (ROD) project. This program brings hope to kids diagnosed with pediatric cancer throughout the United States.

“Our GFL Chesapeake facility was honored to support the Roc Solid Foundation with a donation of $1,500 to the Roc Solid On Demand (ROD) program. Supporting the Roc Solid Foundation is important to our facility because of the life-changing work they do in the community we serve and beyond,” said JT Howington, General Manager at GFL Chesapeake.

A pediatric cancer diagnosis changes the lives of children and their families. The Roc Solid Foundation’s mission is to build hope for kids fighting cancer, and they do this by matching sponsors with a family who is battling pediatric cancer.

The Roc Solid Foundation’s playset program is designed for kids between the ages of one to nine who are receiving active treatment for pediatric cancer. The playset is provided at no cost to the child’s family.

The community group or host who sponsors the build usually receives all construction materials required and easy-to-follow instructions, a list of tools needed and a play kit with fun items and activities for the build day. The process is simple enough that anyone can do it, ensuring that assembling a playset will be a wonderful experience.

While GFL’s Chesapeake team couldn’t meet Kayla in person due to pandemic restrictions, she and her five siblings will no doubt enjoy many hours of backyard fun.

“We were fortunate enough to be matched with Kayla who will have a beautiful playset built at her home as a result of GFL’s sponsorship of ROD,” said JT. “The GFL family wishes Kayla and her family nothing but the best and hope this playset can take her mind off her fight when she needs it!”
