Congratulations to GFL’s Squamish, British Columbia branch on receiving the 2024 Call2Recycle Leader in Sustainability Award, recognizing their exceptional efforts in battery recycling and environmental stewardship.
Early last year, the Squamish branch proudly launched a curbside battery collection service in partnership with Call2Recycle’s Recycle Your Batteries, Canada! program, marking the first initiative of its kind in British Columbia. In 2024, the Squamish branch successfully collected 1,318 kg of batteries across two one-week pick-up periods.
“We’re excited to receive this award and shine a spotlight on the battery collection program we’ve undertaken with Call2Recycle,” said GFL Squamish General Manager Denise Imbeau.
The program allows batteries to be picked up directly from local homes, eliminating the need for individuals to visit a drop-off location or facility.
During designated pick-up weeks, residents simply place their batteries in a clear, resealable bag on top of their recycling tote, signaling to the GFL team that they want their batteries taken.
Once collected, the batteries are delivered to the Squamish branch, where they are sorted, packaged, and ready to be picked up by Recycle Your Batteries Canada! to begin their recycling journey.
"Our goal is to continue raising awareness in our community and to inspire more people to recycle their batteries, helping to prevent them from ending up in landfills," said Imbeau.
