Influential Landfill Manager Receives SWANA Honor

Tami Craig, General Manager of GFL’s Grady Road Landfill in Polk County, Georgia, has been awarded the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) Georgia Chapter 2021 Solid Waste Professional of the Year, Private Sector.

Craig received her award at the SWANA Georgia Fall Conference in Young Harris, Georgia earlier this month. Her exceptional impact as a landfill manager with GFL prompted her colleagues to nominate her.

“After meeting Tami, I quickly realized she is one of the best, a true professional, an inspiring leader, and a diligent environmentalist,” said Region Landfill Manager Edward Hood, who oversees several of GFL’s southeastern US landfills including the Grady Road site. “She is a skilled operator and her impact has been immediate. What she has achieved in a year is remarkable.”

By acknowledging and acting on the needs of Grady Road’s stakeholders, Craig has developed positive relations with the Polk County jurisdiction and earned the trust and support of the local community. Craig also earned the respect and admiration of her staff for her engaging, hands-on management style.

Having worked at landfills for over 20 years, Craig has developed an undeniable aptitude for landfill management by taking on many of the roles necessary to operate one. In her career lifetime, she’s worked in billing and collections, scale house operations, heavy equipment operations, and office management, all of which has equipped her to excel at the helm.

“I am extremely proud of this award, but humbled at the same time, because all it took was honesty, transparency, and doing what’s right,” said Craig of the recognition. “I’ve worked 25 long hard years to get here, and it would have never happened without an outstanding team of employees alongside me and amazing support from my management.”
