Municipal Hazardous or Special Waste program
Drained Oil Filters (MHSW):
Drained oil filters are now covered under the Stewardship Ontario Program (MHSW). GFL will supply our customer with a 360 litre tote. This tote is for the accumulation of drained oil filters from oil changes. This also includes the following filters; spin-on or element style filter that is used in hydraulic, transmission or internal combustion engine, household furnace fuel filter, coolant filter, storage tank diesel fuel filter, sump type automatic transmission filter, plastic/paper element style filter, diesel fuel filter used at retail & commercial pump islands.
This service is completed at No-Charge to the customer. For fuel and gas filters which are not included in the MHSW program. See fuel filter service.
Empty Plastic Containers (MHSW):
Most plastic containers that have stored the following products; synthetic crankcase or engine oil, hydraulic fluid, polyester fluids, circulating oil or turbine oil, paper machine oil, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, gear oil, vegetable oil for lubrication, re-refined oil, electrical insulating oil, refrigeration system oil, compressor oil, mineral heat transfer fluid, marine engine oil for vessels operating domestically. GFL will supply our customer with a 360 litre tote. This tote is for the accumulation of any plastic containers that stored the above mentioned products.
This service is completed at No-Charge to the customer.
Used Anti-freeze Recovery (MHSW):
GFL supplies this service in two methods. The type of service is based on the amount of used anti-freeze waste being created. One method is in a plastic drum (supplied by GFL).
The other is in a bulk storage container that is pumped out. Both services can be placed on a regular service schedule.
Aerosol Can Disposal:
Most aerosol cans still contain some product after the can is empty. GFL will supply our customer with an open top drum for the storage and disposal of these pressurized cans. A fee will apply at time of pickup.
Used Oil Recovery:
GFL will pump any used crankcase, transmission and gear oil from tanks or drums on a regular service schedule. Mixing used oil with other waste products is not recommended. This will create a situation where the used oil pickup may be charged to the customer for misrepresenting the waste stream.
Ontario Government Regulations state that you must have your interceptors pumped out at least once a year while maintaining less than 4" of oil on top of your interceptor and less than 12" of sludge on the bottom. Our service representative will pump all three stages of the interceptor until there is no waste remaining. After the service is complete, it is recommended that the first stage of the interceptor be filled with water to the appropriate level.
As part of the interceptor service, we will also pump out any catch basins or hoist pits at no extra charge. Removing floor grates to pump the trench of waste product is completed at an extra charge. This will ensure proper flow of oil water and sludge into the interceptor and prevent backups.
Parts Washer (Solvent/Aqueous):
GFL offers a wide variety of parts washers. The models vary in size and volume to suit any size shop requirements. There are also various types of solvents and an aqueous solution available. GFL can also service any machine that may be owned by a customer CMS (Customer Machine Service).
The service will include the following; supply of the parts washer, supply of the solvent, maintenance and service of the parts washer, disposal and transportation of the waste.
Sometimes customers produce contaminated gasoline or diesel, or they fill their tanks with the incorrect fuel. This fuel is no longer useable and must be disposed of in a proper manner. GFL will supply our customer with the appropriate sized and labelled drum for the service.
Fuel filters still contain some gasoline in the filter media, which needs to be treated and disposed of in a proper manner. GFL will supply our customer with the appropriate sized and labelled drum for the service.
Absorbents and oily rags are used to clean up spills of different waste products (usually some type of oil). These contaminated absorbents/rags can’t be thrown into the garbage. Proper disposal of the waste that is stored in the absorbent/rags is required. GFL will supply our customer with the appropriate sized and labelled drum for the service.
Used Oil/Used Anti-freeze Storage:
GFL carries a complete line of ULC approved tanks for collection and storage of used oil and anti-freeze. Under the MOE there are certain requirements when storing and collecting these waste streams.
