With strategically located operations across Canada, we can undertake practically any environmental challenge by creating safe, accessible and cost-effective solutions focused on reducing the amount of waste that requires disposal, restoring customers’ operations to peak efficiency and recovering valuable resources that would otherwise be lost.
GFL Environmental is applying to the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation & Parks (MECP) for approval to operate an innovative new process to recycle Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) dust from the steelmaking industry at the Brant Street Facility in Hamilton. This approval requires an amendment to the site’s existing operating Environmental Compliance Approval (ECA) to receive a new waste class (143 – EAF dust in solid form), as well as a new ECA for air and noise.
We currently provide a wide range of environmental solutions to steelmakers in southern Ontario. However one stream of waste – their Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) dust – must be shipped 600-800 kilometers to a recycler in the United States because there is no local recycling option. By creating the first Electric Arc Furnace dust recycling process in Canada, GFL Environmental will help to reduce the environmental footprint and improve sustainability for the province’s steelmakers.
As we proceed through the process with the MECP, all public documents related to the application will be posted and be accessible here.
On August 17, 2021, GFL Environmental, Inc. purchased certain lines of business from Terrapure Environmental Ltd., including Environmental Solutions, Organics Solutions, Oil Recycling Solutions and Landfill operations. The locations under these businesses and the services they provide continue to exist under GFL.
Note: You may notice increased activity (i.e., vehicles and staff onsite) at our Brant Street Facility in the upcoming weeks/months, but that activity is simply related to storage of equipment and does not involve the proposed Electric Arc Furnace Dust Recycling Project in any way.
