Global Recycling Day and GFL services

Global Recycling Day is Saturday March 18. To celebrate, we want to highlight our recycling services to help our customers and communities stay Green For Life! Global Recycling Day is an important reminder for all of us to unite and prioritize our planet’s well-being.

GFL works hard to serve our communities and create awareness of how recycling can help reduce our carbon footprint and that of our customers.

Why Recycle?

“Recycling helps to reduce the need to extract virgin materials,” Steven Heard, GFL operations manager, said. “More importantly, it helps protect environmental resources.”

Recycling is a critical component in supporting a circular economy.

Heard works as the operations manager at the Winnipeg Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

In 2020, the MRF won the Recycling Facility of the Year award from the National Waste and Recycling Association (NWRA). The award is based on key factors such as innovation, sustainability and environmental impact. The site has been key in supporting municipalities across the province of Manitoba in meeting their waste diversion goals.

The machinery and technology at the MRF separate recyclable materials and turn them into high-quality processed recyclables that are sold to be repurposed.

“GFL has a big recycling footprint in the recycling world, and more investments into advanced facilities like ours will help improve recycling processes,” Heard said.

Other reasons to recycle include protecting ecosystems and wildlife, saving energy, reducing air and water pollution and conserving natural resources.

Steven and his team work hard to educate customers on types of recycling contamination, which can help to inform where promotion and education efforts may be required. The goal is to support more efficient recycling programs by minimizing any non-recyclables being collected and delivered to the MRF.

GFL is continually reviewing its existing recycling technology and assessing and implementing new technology in order to improve its sorting capabilities. GFL continues to invest in state-of-the-art technology at its MRFs that allow it to achieve improved recovery of recyclable materials and produce high-quality processed recyclables.
